Earthquake Shakes Black Sea Coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale was registered off the Black Sea coast, frightening locals but causing minimal damage.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which took place Monday at about 9 p.m., was located roughly 5.5 kilometers west of Anapa and 125 kilometers from Krasnodar, RIA-Novosti reported, citing geologists at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The report said that residents reported feeling shockwaves in the Krasnodar region towns and cities of Novorossiisk, Krymsk and Gelendzhik, all of which were swamped by devastating flash flooding in early July.

By Tuesday, no casualties or major destruction had been reported.

Representatives of Olympstroi, a government corporation responsible for preparations for the Sochi Winter Olympics to be held in the Krasnodar region in 2014 told RIA-Novosti that Olympic buildings had escaped the earthquake unharmed.

Residents of Novorossiisk, however, took to blogging sites to say that they had fled their homes after feeling the ground shake.
