Consumer Protection Service Threatens Ban on Ukrainian Cheese

Federal Consumer Protection Service head Gennady Onishchenko said early Tuesday that certain Ukrainian cheeses could be removed from sale in Russia if issues with their quality are not resolved, Interfax reported.

The consumer service, known as Rospotrebnadzor, announced Monday that an analysis of 14 samples of Ukrainian cheeses revealed their contents to contain vegetable oils. It said the oils were not listed as ingredients on the cheeses' packaging, a violation of Russian law.

"We will act strictly in accord with our legislation. It allows us to react in the broadest sense to such violations. Starting with removal from sale, confiscation, and so on," Onishchenko said, Interfax reported.

"Unfortunately, our interactions with the Ukrainian side responsible [for this matter] have produced no results. We have not thus far seen a desire to conduct a business-like conversation," Onishchenko said.

On January 12 Onishchenko said his service had concluded "in the fourth quarter of 2011 there was a noticeable deterioration in the quality standards of the cheese supplied from Ukraine," pointing in particular to an increased level of palm oil in certain cheeses.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
