Former governor of the Sverdlovsk region Alexander Misharin has taken over as head of Russian Railways' subsidiary company, Skorostniye Magistrali, a news report said Thursday.
Misharin will attend his first meeting as head of the company and first vice president of Russian Railways on Thursday after Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev appointed him to the new posts on Wednesday, the Ura.ru news portal reported Thursday, without citing a source.
The meeting, on the development of high-speed rail lines in Russia, will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, with whom Misharin recently traveled to Paris as part of Yekaterinburg's bid to host the World Expo exhibition in 2020. The bid was initiated by Misharin when he was still acting governor of the region.
Misharin resigned from his post as Sverdlovsk region governor in May. He previously worked for Russian Railways between 2005 and 2008, when he served on the company's board of directors.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
