Bulgaria has relaunched its nuclear power program, hiring Westinghouse to prepare a proposal on how to use a Russian-built reactor after shelving Atomstroiexport's Belene power plant project in March.
Westinghouse will put forward a plan for installing the 1,000 megawatt reactor, which was built by Atomstroiexport for the Belene plant, at the Kozloduy power station, Bulgarian Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev said Monday.
The government plans to offer up to 49 percent to foreign investors.
The $12.5 billion Belene plant was expected to be financed by nuclear power monopoly Rosatom. In March, Bulgaria's center-right government canceled the project to allay concerns that Russia would gain control of the EU country's nuclear future.
